What Members Receive During a Strike

Strike Pay

CUPE National Strike Fund: begins Day 1 of the strike.

  • Weekly pay for 20 hours of strike duties:
    • Weeks 1-5: $350/week
    • Weeks 6-11: $375/week
    • Weeks 12-15: $400/week
    • Week 16 onward: $450/week
  • Normal schedule: 5 days/week, 4 hours/day (adjustments possible).

CUPE BC Defence Fund: begins Day 1 of the strike.

  • Week 1 onward: $15/day, up to $75/week

Employee Support Grant (ESG):

  • If prevented from working due to a lawful BCTF picket line, employees receive 75% of their base wage for scheduled hours.
  • Paid within 45 days after the dispute ends.

Benefits During a Strike

Insurance Coverage:

  • CUPE National pays group life and extended health premiums from Day 1 if employer stops paying.
  • If coverage is denied by the insurer, CUPE ensures no break in coverage.

Strike Expenses:

  • CUPE National may cover essential costs (e.g., signs, porta-potties, etc.) for locals with limited funds.

How to Access These Benefits

Eligibility:

  • Must be a member in good standing and on active payroll at strike start.
  • Perform minimum 20 hours of strike duties per week.

Application Process:

  • Complete required CUPE National forms (Notice of Strike Mandate, Strike Pay Application, etc.).
  • Local strike committee manages reporting and distribution.
  • CUPE BC benefits require submission of National Strike Fund forms to CUPE BC.

Unused Funds:

  • Any unused strike funds must be returned to CUPE National or CUPE BC after the strike.
