While we all understand the importance of having practicum students in the workplace, this does not mean that they are permitted to be used to augment our workforce. For Example; a practicum student is not permitted to cover a CUPE members absence, nor are they permitted to cover off CUPE members during their break periods. It is the expectation that CUPE members who agree to take on a practicum student are there to work alongside them as a mentor for the duration of their practicum. They should never be “put on the schedule” and given their own assignment for the day(s).
