Meeting Notice – January 2019

There has been a common theme amongst many members and it is that this year’s school start-up has been the most demanding both physically and mentally.  From our clerical division that has experienced decreases in hours while technological demands increase, to all of those members in the Assistants and Transportation divisions who have been deeply impacted with change as a result of the grade reconfiguration.  We applaud your ability to keep a positive attitude while in the throes of such chaos and confusion and hope that everyone has been able to weather the storm unscathed.

We would like to extend a HUGE “Thank you” to all the members that were able to join us at our first ever Site Visits.  From September 20 – November 30 we managed to visit every site in the District and were even invited back to meet with members that couldn’t connect the first time around.  Please be sure to attend our January 2019 General Meeting for a full report.

Canada’s striking postal workers have the full support of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and its 665,000 members nationwide.

During the 2015 election campaign, Justin Trudeau called out the Harper government for “rolling back many fundamental labour rights that affect workers’ ability to organize freely, bargain collectively in good faith, and work in a safe environment.” Yet here we are today, watching the Liberal government under Prime Minister Trudeau legislating striking postal workers back to work.

His predecessor, Stephen Harper, did the same in 2011, but with one important difference: at least Stephen Harper allowed for a debate in Parliament. The Liberal government’s draconian procedural measures have ensured its back-to-work legislation will sail through the House of Commons in a matter of a few hours.

Postal workers have been on rotating strikes to demand equal pay and safer workplaces. But rather than allow them the opportunity to collectively bargain for fairness and safety in their jobs, causes the Liberals claim to support, the government has come down squarely in the corner of management. This decision from Trudeau and Employment Minister Patty Hajdu sets a dangerous precedent and sends a clear message to employers everywhere: don’t bother bargaining, we’ll bail you out.

Collective bargaining is how meaningful progress is made in the lives and livelihoods of working people. That’s why it’s a right protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Mr. Trudeau had a choice to make this week and, unfortunately, he has chosen to join the ranks of Stephen Harper and others who worked to undermine those rights, rather than respect and strengthen them. In tabling this legislation, Trudeau has betrayed not just postal workers, but all working people in Canada.

We believe it critical that all our members have the opportunity to actively participate in workshops and training sessions that will provide them with the skills and knowledge to not only enhance but also enrich their work experience.

We are committed to working with the Employer to bring both engaging and meaningful content that will allow members to face the challenges in their worksites with confidence and pride.

Mental Health issues have been at the forefront as of late and are thus driving the need for a deeper understanding on how we recognize, and also manage, challenging behaviours.  The School Districts Learning Services Department will be hosting the following sessions on “Mental Health Literacy”, and the Union would like to encourage members to take advantage of this training opportunity.

The course is being offered as follows:

Neighbourhood Learning Centre (NLC)

• Times: 8:30am-11:00am or 11:30am-2:00pm
• Dates: October 5th, 19th & February 22^nd

Or

Learning Services Department

• Times: 8:30am-11:00am or 11:30am-2:00pm
• Dates: May 3^rd

There will also be an opportunity for those who participate in one the 2.5 hour session to be eligible to take the UBC online self-paced course on Mental Health Literacy to which a Certificate will be issued and any costs to members will be reimbursed by Student Services upon successful completion.

Every member in each of our Divisions has the potential to work in and around children, if we are all able to understand and have a deeper awareness of the words used when discussing mental health it can only lead to a positive experience and outcome for all involved.

SEPTEMBER 2018 EDITION

Your CUPE 411 Executive would like to extend a HUGE “Thank you” to those twelve month employees that worked tirelessly this past July and August to ensure all of our sites were ready to go for staff and students on September 4th. Your commitment, dedication along with your professional standards are a reflection of CUPE 411 and it pleases us to say that you have represented not only yourselves but your Union incredibly well.

With the first week already under our belts, we hope that our ten month members have had an opportunity to get settled into their sites, some of which may be new, as well as into their respective assignments and are looking forward to an exciting and rewarding year ahead!

With our District being one of the fastest growing in the province, coupled with an extensive overhaul to the delivery of instruction in the form of grade reconfiguration, we anticipate there may be some growing pains felt by members in all of our Divisions; we would ask that you take on your duties and responsibilities with a positive attitude and should you encounter problems along the way please ask for help. We are all in this together and supporting one-another is the best possible approach to a happy and healthy work environment.

We have an enthusiastic group of Shop Stewards that are eager to take on the challenge of representing members from all our Divisions, along with an experienced group of Table Officers committed to face-to-face member engagement coupled with effective and accurate communication.

There is an open-door policy at our Union office and we welcome feedback from all our members, both good and bad, as it is important for us to know what we are doing right and where there is room for improvement.
