COVID-19 Update for August 29, 2020

Did you know the Chilliwack School District has their 2020/2021 re-start plan, to include their health & safety protocols, posted on the home page of their website?

Did you know that SD#33 is offering a hybrid learning program to all Elementary and Middle school students?

Did you know that every School District in B.C. has been provided additional funding (August 27th segement) to support remote learning opportunities for students?

The Union encourages members to review all the relevant plans and protocols in order to have a clear understanding of the expectations in the workplace effective immediately.  The K-12 landscape is ever changing at present however if you have questions or concerns about what is currently being proposed we would encourage you to reach out to an elected Union Representative for guidance and support.

The Union will continue to provide regular updates whether they be from local, provincial (K-12 Bulletin – FAQ’s No.5), or national sources.  With so much credible information being shared by various industry professionals we feel members have a right to make their decisions based on ALL the information being presented and not just what one or two special interest groups may be serving up.

FYI:  Members are reminded to check their personal email’s for important updates from the Union.

CUPE BC K-12 Updates

With an ever changing landscape in the K-12 sector the Union has been waiting to see how things are going to unfold for the 2020-2021 school year.  In the meantime we will continue to publish the updates from CUPE BC’s K-12 President’s Council as the information is coming directly from our Union Reps that are engaged in discussions at the government level and we would hope that its accuracy may be of both interest and benefit to our members….

IMPORTANT – COVID-19 Update for August 10, 2020

Good Evening Members,
To all CUPE 411 members that may be seeking a medical accommodation effective September 8, 2020 due to COVID-19.
If members have already received emails from the Districts H.R. Department asking for documentation to be completed the Union urges you to connect with an elected Union Representative prior to having your physician complete any such documents.
Our Employer should only be gathering information that pertains specifically to the  accommodation being sought and not personal information (i.e. medical diagnosis) as well as the type of accommodation; is it permanent or is there a time duration.  Also the Union should be involved in all of these discussions with our members to ensure that every request is handled in a fair and just manner. Members seeking a work place accommodation are always encouraged to “cc” an elected Union Representative of their choosing in on any email correspondence with the Employer in this regard.
If you want to know more about the “Duty to Accommodate“, or information surrounding the “Accommodation Process“, use the links embedded in this sentence.
With September 8th right around the corner we do not want to see members pressured into making decisions that are not in their best interest due to lack of time and limited access to their physician, therefore we are encouraging members to be proactive if a workplace accommodation is required for the 2020-2021 school year.  We look forward to speaking with you….
In Solidarity,
CUPE 411 Executive

Spring Break 2021 – Letter of Understanding

Your Union was able to reach an agreement with our Employer regarding the 2-week 2020-2021 Spring Break for all of our 10-month Members.  For details please see the link below:
Spring Break LOU 2020-2021

There are often questions that members have pertaining to these agreements therefore we have provided some FAQ’s that we hope you will find helpful.

Your Union is aware in the discrepancy in time being made up between the members who work less than 7 hours a day and those that do.  We had asked our Employer if that time (approx. 1.5 hrs) could be given to those staff who work less than 7 hours per day, to be used sometime during the school year when needed, unfortunately our request was denied.

2020 Election Results Are In……

Good Afternoon Members,

After a rather lengthy AGM we are please to share the names of the successful nominees in this year’s Election process:

2020 CUPE 411 – Elections Announcement

We will be sharing out more contact details in the coming weeks as there is going to be some transition time required for some of these positions.  Emails will not be switched over until after June 30th to allow for outgoing Executive to tidy up any loose ends.  However, if you do require immediate assistance and are unsure on who to speak with please email unionoffice@cupe411.ca or call 604-392-1411 and we will direct your inquiry accordingly.

Thanks again to everyone who allowed their names to stand for positions, we are encouraged to see the number of members that are looking to actively participate in our Union.  It speaks volumes to the work we have done when it comes to member engagement in the last two years, and there is nothing like a crisis to stir up activists when they see injustices unfolding all around them.

Congratulations again everyone and I hope to make this year ahead, one filled with passion and purpose!

In Solidarity,

Tracey O’Hara, Vice President  (Returning Officer for the 2020 Elections)

P.S. – A special shout out to my “wing-man” today, I couldn’t have done it without you Steve!
